Provisional agreement supports the investing opportunities of Finnish bio-based industry

This week, in their trialogue meeting, the Member States of the European Union, the European Commission and the European Parliament reached an agreement regarding the inclusion of the region’s land use (LULUCF) in EU’s climate objectives until 2030. According to the Ministry of the Environment and the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, each Member State will set the criteria for their managed forest land for the period 2021–2025 and 2026–2030. According to the proposal, the reference level is not based on the previous intensity of forest use; the assessment criteria will be based on the sustainability and strengthening of the carbon-sequestration capacity of forests in the long term, in accordance with the Paris Climate Agreement.

Agreement indicates that LULUCF would not restrain the increased fellings of the Finnish forest. I.e. wood raw material for new forest industry investments could be obtained according to the government strategy.
